St Mary's Sound and Light Appeal
What is the problem?
The lighting and sound systems in St Mary’s Church are at the end of their lives. The lighting system was installed over 50 years ago after the Chancel fire. Where the wiring joins the spotlights it is brittle and a potential fire risk. Replacing any of the light bulbs involves a perilous climb up a very long ladder at great risk to the person concerned. The ‘Working at Height Regulations’ now mean that lifts or scaffolding towers are needed at a cost of approximately £400 per day. The lighting is very energy inefficient and costly to maintain by modern standards. The bulbs will soon no longer be produced.
So, on grounds of fire risk, health and safety, and energy efficiency, the presentlighting must be replaced urgently.
It is embarrassing and annoying when the sound system does not work properly. There are areas of the church where the radio microphones break down leaving everyone struggling to hear. It is excruciating when the sound of ‘feedback’ spoils solemn moments.
What is the answer?
The estimated cost of a new, energy efficient lighting installation is £35,000.
The estimated cost of a new sound system is £10,000.
We therefore need to raise £45,000 to replace both systems.
Today, the essential operating income of the church, with prudent contingency, will not stretch to cover this vital investment for the future. So we need to launch a special appeal to undertake this essential bit of good housekeeping.
Will you help?
100 years ago this year, our predecessors completed the renovation of the church to become the beautiful building we know today. St Mary’s is used by many people in Welwyn, not just by regular worshippers but for weddings, funerals, baptisms and other occasional services, as well as for concerts, meetings and other events.
