45th Welwyn Festival

June 2019

Welwyn Festival was started by St Mary's Church 45 years ago.  Today it is run by the community for the community by the Welwyn Festival Committee, and St Mary’s is delighted to take part by hosting a number of events.  Copies of the free festival programme can be picked up in church and many other places around the village – look out for the red cover.  You can find the festival website here and regular updates are posted on their Facebook page and Twitter feed.   There are many events taking place but those in Church or Church House are listed below:​

Friday 7th June

  • The Welwyn Oscars: 7 pm - late.  Celebrating Welwyn businesses and people. 

Saturday 14th June

  • Street Market:  9 am – 12 noon

o   Refreshments and cake

o   Fairtrade stall

o   St Mary’s School Choir:  10 – 10.30 am

o   Community Choir:  10.30 – 11.00 am

o   Children’s Church Trail

o   Tower Tours

o   St John Ambulance

Sunday 15th June

  • Parish Communion and Activity Based Church (ABC) followed by refreshments:  9.30 – 10.40 am

 

Monday 18th June

  • Craftea: 3.30 – 5.15 pm

o   Storytelling, craft and singing for primary school children with parents/carers, including a meal for children.  Contact 07887 992173 to book a place.

  • Dr Aubrey’s Art Slide Lecture “The Art of the Magi”:  7.45 for 8 pm

o   Refreshments, donations to festival charities

  • Refreshment stop at approximately 8.30 pm during Rook’s Tour (led by George Saunders).  Meet at the Fire Station at 7.30 pm

 

Tuesday 18th June

  • Community Café at 9.30 – 12 noon

    • Barclays Banking Assistance Service together with Trading Standards, Age UK and PCSO from Herts Constabulary, with information about frauds and scams and how to keep yourself safe.

  • Rook’s Talk “The History of Welwyn”:  8 pm

    • Refreshments, donations to festival charities

 

Wednesday 19th June

  • Rev’d David Munchin’s talk “Alps and Apenines; Welwyn to Rome by Bicycle:  8 pm

    • Refreshments, donations to festival charities

 

Thursday 20th June

  • Refreshment stop at approximately 8.30 pm during Rook’s Tour (led by George Saunders).  Meet at the Fire Station at 7.30 pm.

  • Welwyn’s hand bell ringers, The Arpeggios, practice in the church:  8.30 – 9.30 pm.  All welcome to listen.

 

Saturday 22nd June

  • Men’s Breakfast with speaker Debbie Coupland on “Smoke and Mirrors; the aftermath of WW1 and the Treaty of Versailles”:  8 – 10 am.

    • Tickets £8 from the Danesbury Shop

  • Saturday Morning Café with Fairtrade stall: 10.30 – 11.30 am

  • Organ Pops Concert: organist Linden Innes-Hopkins: 11 – 11.45 am

Sunday 24th June

  • Parish Communion and Activity Based Church (ABC) followed by refreshments:  9.30 – 10.40 am

  • Festal (Choral) Evensong:  6.30 pm followed by a glass of wine
